Almost all major smart home brands — including Google, Amazon, Apple and Samsung SmartThings — are aligned behind Matter. The new standard is designed to help them simplify their connected home ecosystems by allowing you to control all your devices from one app and voice assistant of your choice.
But what exactly is Matter?
Matter is a unified connectivity technology that provides the pipes and common language for connected devices to talk to each other. It’s not a platform like HomeKit, Alexa and Siri, and it won’t automate your smart home or make decisions for you.
It will, however, remove your dependence on hubs and bridges to connect devices. All Matter devices will connect directly to your local network over Wi-Fi, Thread or Ethernet. This means your devices will be accessible when your Internet connection goes down and won’t have to send information to a cloud server over the public Internet.
Because Matter relies on Wi-Fi and Thread, most of your devices will be able to upgrade to Matter with an over-the-air software update. This includes the Nest Hub (2nd Gen), Amazon Echo (4th Gen) and the new HomePod Mini from Apple.
