The Linen Suit

The Linen suit is the ultimate summer staple. Soft and lightweight, it is naturally breathable which helps regulate internal temperatures. It also keeps you cool by reflecting the sun’s heat rather than absorbing it, which is why we recommend sticking to light colours.

Like cotton, it is a naturally anti-bacterial fabric but unlike wool, linen does not require dry cleaning. Instead, you can wash it yourself and the material will actually improve with each wear. Just avoid putting it in the dryer, as this can damage it.

A big plus for linen suits is that they aren’t constrained by traditional tailoring’s adherence to dark colours, opening up new possibilities where colour goes. Pastel shades of blue and pink look especially good on breezy linen tailoring, although we do advise caution when it comes to wearing such hues in a formal setting.

Linen suits are the perfect companion for events and occasions that call for summer smart attire, such as a wedding or dinner party. Pair a navy linen suit jacket with matching pants for a classic look, or go for a khaki linen suit that will pair well with almost any dress shirt and tie. For a more casual and relaxed feel, go tieless or add a coloured pocket square to the mix.

If you’re a little nervous about tackling linen because of its notoriously crease-prone nature, opt for a blend. This is what Alex Mill’s Mercer linen suit does, pairing the light weight fabric with recycled elastane for a stretch that feels more manageable than pure linen. Accented with notch lapels, flap pockets and a two-button fastening, it’s the ideal choice for a day out at a gallery opening or a friend’s second cousin’s third wedding. Linen suit
