Air pistols use compressed air or carbon dioxide to propel a pellet or BB down the barrel and out the muzzle. The most common type of air pistol is powered by a single-use 12-gram CO2 cartridge. This type of gun typically delivers the most power for the least cost and is popular among casual shooters.
More advanced air pistols can be precharged pneumatic (PCP) guns that have onboard reservoirs of pressurized air. Upon cocking, the piston in these guns is pushed forward by a spring to compress the air inside the reservoir, and the released air drives the projectile down the barrel and out the muzzle. PCP air pistols are capable of higher velocities and more precision than single-shot spring or CO2 guns. However, they require the use of a special compressed air tank and can be temperature sensitive, requiring the user to pump them more or less frequently depending on the weather.
While more expensive than a CO2 model, these guns are typically quieter and allow the shooter to practice in areas where firearms are prohibited. Additionally, they offer the same high level of quality and pride in ownership as a traditional firearm. air pistols
