What Is Counselling?

Counselling is a process where the client, with the support of their therapist, identifies and develops strategies for addressing life changes. Whether the change is related to relationships, work, or mental health, counseling provides an opportunity for people to examine their lives in greater depth. It is often challenging for individuals to take the first step of seeking counselling, but once they do, it can be rewarding and lead to life-long positive changes.

During the first session, it is common for a therapist to ask questions in order to gain an understanding of the problems and how they impact the client’s life. They may also use different methods such as reflection, a non-judgmental attitude, and active listening to help the client explore their thoughts and feelings. Counsellors should be able to build rapport but not to the point where they become emotionally involved with their clients, as this can hinder the counselling process.

Most counselling takes place in planned, regular sessions that last for about an hour. Sessions can be one-on-one or group based and some are specialised, for example family therapy or addiction counselling. Depending on your situation, you may find yourself dealing with the same issues over time or the therapist will bring up new ones for you to work on.

Some situations can be resolved in just a few sessions, but others will take longer, depending on the complexity and the level of change required. It is important that you find a therapist who understands your situation, has the training and experience to deal with it and you are comfortable talking to them about personal matters. https://transformation-coach.co/
